What to Look For When Buying a Steam Shower

A steam shower, at first glance, looks like a normal shower. However, while it may include a normal showerhead, it isn't a normal shower stall. Due to the large amount of steam forced through the shower wall jets, all floor, ceiling and wall materials must be made of waterproof materials which must be able to handle a warm, moist environment, much like a sauna.

Like most luxury items, the quality of the steam shower purchased will depend on both the amount you're willing to spend and your knowledge of the product before purchase. Only you can decide the dollar amount, but listed below are a few tips which will give you the information you need to make an informed purchase.

First, you need to decide if you want to convert your existing shower, which will mean buying parts piece by piece and installing them yourself, providing you are a competent plumber AND electrician. Not having the proper training in either of these areas, can be deadly for you or a family member. If you aren't positive about your skills, don't leave it to chance, hire a professional. Be sure your existing stall materials can withstand the heat and moisture of the steam.

If you decide to buy an all-in-one model, look for the following qualities, starting with the most basic:

The frame should be made of a thick, sturdy, solid aluminum. Not plastic, not metal coated plastic. The thickness of the aluminum should be a minimum of 1.5mm to prevent denting.

Fixtures, too, should be made of metal. Look for either chrome or chrome-plated metals for your shower fixtures. Do not opt for chrome-plated plastic.

Check the weight of the complete unit. If it is solidly built of quality materials, it will be heavy and hard to move. If it feels flimsy, it probably is.

Glass doors and walls should be made of tempered safety glass, 5-6mm thick and all edges completely covered by the frame.

Look for a third party electronics firm approval seal, such as CE, UL, or UTL. This cannot be stressed enough. Water and electricity WILL KILL.

Find a company that does product testing. If a representative can't answer your questions concerning testing of their product and how the parts withstood those tests, find a company who can give you answers you'll be comfortable with.

Finally, this is a costly luxury item, get a warranty.
