If you're stuck with a grubby, grungy bathtub and scrubbing it doesn't help at all, it could be that you're due for a refinishing process.
You can either refinish or replace it. Replacing your bathtub involves not only the cost of the new tub, but the added expense of replacing the surrounding walls and floor, wall boards, plumbing parts and hardware. It's time consuming and expensive. Not to mention messy. Even more expensive if you don't do the labor yourself. That's assuming you can find a tub to fit in the existing space. If you can't you'll need to either widen the area (big mess and remodel) or give up on the project until you do find the right one.not be easy either. This leads to the option of refinishing.
Bathtub refinishing is a process that involves stripping the tub of its current coating (including lime, mold, and rust), blasting it down for a smooth surface, and applying a new waterproof coating. By the time you're done it's hard to believe its not a brand new tub. However, its not a do-it-yourself project; it involves the use of strong chemicals and materials that are often beyond the skill and ability for most homeowners and untrained users. You can try it, but if it goes badly we suggest having a backup professional ready to step in and take over. DIY kits are limited in their strength, durability and way they are applied.
If you're good at everything you try then by all means give it a shot. And you may not be as picky as some people, so the DIY kits from various home improvement stores could be perfect for you. At the very least the first few layers of grunge will go away, it just may not look completely brand new.
