Plumbing Basics - Installing a Bathtub

Installing a bathtub isn't exactly rocket science, but it does require solid plumbing, carpentry, and sometimes, tiling skills. Replacing an old bathtub with a new one is also a moderately difficult project. If the old tub is readily accessible, the project can move speedily; if you have to open a wall to remove the old tub and position the new bathtub, the task is much harder. In either case, the project is within a home handyman's skills, although you will need a helper to move out the old tub and set in the new one. Make sure you have qualified yourself for the job and are comfortable attempting it. Rather than hiring a contractor to take over a halfway-completed project, it is better to consider employing one before you begin. Chances are you may need a professional plumber to make tube connections.

This article will help you install a new bathtub in your bathroom if you have already bought a new tub and don't need to change the arrangement of your previous water supply pipes.

Your tools and material checklist should comprise the following:

Preparing for the Installation

Firstly, the supporting frame supplied with the bath should be fitted (if required) according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Next, fit the taps or mixer to the bathtub. When fitting the tap block, it is important to make sure that if the tap comes with a plastic washer, it is fitted between the bath and the taps. On a plastic bath, it is also sensible to fit a supporting plate under the taps unit to prevent strain on the bathtub.

Fit the flexible tap connectors to the bottom of the two taps using 2 nuts and olives (sometimes supplied with the tub).

Fit the plug-hole outlet by smearing mastic filler round the sink outlet hole, and then pass the outlet through the hole in the bath. Use the nut supplied by the manufacturer to fit the plug-hole. Examine the plug-hole outlet for an inlet on the side for the overflow pipe.

Next, fit the end of the flexible overflow pipe to the overflow outlet. After that, screw the pipe to the overflow face which should be fitted inside the bath. Make sure you use all of the supplied washers.

Connect the trap to the bottom of the waste outlet on the bathtub by winding the thread of the waste outlet with silicone mastic or PTFE tape, and screw on the trap to the outlet. Connect the bottom of the overflow tube in a similar manner.

The bath should now be ready to be fitted in its final position.

Removing Old Taps

If you need to replace old taps with new ones as a part of your installation, then the first thing you should do is disconnect the water supply. After doing so, turn on the taps to drain any water remaining in the system. The process of removing the existing taps can be quite problematic due to the restricted access that is often the case.

Use a basin wrench (crowsfoot spanner) or a tap tool to undo the nut that connects the supply pipes to the taps. Have a cloth ready for the remaining water that will come from the pipes. Once the supply pipes have been removed, use the same tool to loosen the nut that holds the taps onto the bath/basin. You will need to stop the single taps from turning during this process. Once the taps have been removed, the holes in the bath/basin will have to be cleaned of any old sealing compound.

Before moving on to fit the new taps, compare the pipe connections on the old taps to the new taps. If the old taps are longer than the new taps, then a shank adapter is required for the new taps to fit.

Installing the Bathtub

Using the two wooden boards under its feet, place the bathtub in the required position. The wooden boards are helpful in evenly spreading the weight of the bathtub over the area of the boards instead of focusing all the weight onto four small points.

The next goal is to ensure that the bathtub is leveled all round. This can be achieved by checking the spirit level and adjusting the feet on the bathtub until the spirit level reads level.

To install taps, fit the bottom of the furthest flexible tap connector to the appropriate supply pipe by making a compression join; then do the same for the other tap.

Switch on the water supply and check all joints and new pipework for leaks and tighten them if necessary. Fill the bathtub and also check the overflow outlet and the normal outlet for leaks.

Finally, fix the bath paneling as described in the manufacturer's instruction manual.

Tiling and sealing around the bathtub should wait until the bathtub has been used at least once as this will settle it into its final position.

Fitting New Taps

If the tails of the new taps are plastic, then you will need a plastic connector to prevent damage to the thread. One end of the connector fits on the plastic tail of the tap and the other end provides a connection to the existent supply pipes.

If you need to fit a monobloc, then you will require reducing couplers, which connects the 10mm pipe of the monobloc to the standard 15mm supply pipe.

Next, position the tap in the mounting hole in the bath/basin ensuring that the washers are in place between the tap and the sink. Secure the tap in place with the manufacturer provided backnut. Once the tap is securely in place, the supply pipes can be connected to the tails of the taps. The taps can either be connected by using corrugated copper piping or with normal tap connectors. The former type should be connected to the tap ends first, tightening only by hand. The supply pipes can later be connected to the other end. Tighten both ends with a spanner after both ends have been connected.

Tiling Around the Bathtub

In the area where the bath meets the tile, it is necessary to seal the joins with a silicone rubber caulking. This is important as the fitting can move enough to crack a rigid seal, causing the water to penetrate the wall between the bath and the tiling, leading to complications with dampness and possible leaks to the ceiling below.

You can choose from a variety of coloured sealants to blend in your fixtures and fittings. They are sold in tubes and cartridges, and are capable of sealing gaps up to a width of 3mm (1/8 inch). If you have a larger gap to fill, you can fill it with twists of soaked newspaper or soft rope. Remember to always fill the bathtub with water before sealing, to allow for the movement experienced when the tub is in use. The sealant can crack fairly early if you do not take into account this movement before sealing.

Alternatively, ceramic coving or quadrant tiles can be used to edge the bath or shower tray. Plastic strips of coving, which are easy to use and cut to size, are also easily available on the market. It is advisable to fit the tiles using water-resistant or waterproof adhesive and grout.

It is important to make sure that the bathtub is not undersized for you. You should also take into consideration if the bathtub is for two people or for personal usage.

After you have considered the functional role of your tub, another point that plays a big role is the design of the tub. The color and style of the tub should be in perfect coordination with the other characteristics of the bathroom and its theme. A tub that is able to blend in along with the overall appearance and look of your bathroom is the one you should be looking for.

Here is some vital information on how one can prolong the quality and durability of the bathtub. A tub has several materials. They are fiberglass, porcelain, wood, marble, and cast iron. Naturally, the price range varies depending upon the type of material preferred. The most practical bath tubs are the ones made of fiberglass. Your ultimate decision on the kind of bathtub you would like to buy will mainly depend upon the resources which are available to you, the durability and how often the bath tub will be used by you.

With the help of the many tips that have been discussed above, you will certainly find it easy to acquire the bathtub of your choice. The choice you make will also be influenced by your budget. Today's market has a wide range of bathtubs to select from. The bathtubs today have various colors, styles and prices. As long as you are specific about your requirements and know your budget, you will find it very easy to purchase the ideal bathtub.

6 Easy Steps To Choosing The Right Bathtub

There are hundreds of different kinds of bathtubs available in the markets today, all of varying styles, which is why selecting the right one for your home is not a very simple task. Not only do you have to pick the right color to match your bathroom and ensure that the design is right, but many more decisions have to be taken. Thus, this article lists all the factors that need to be considered when choosing a bathtub so that you end up buying the ideal one.

1) Functionality: A bathtub is essentially used for bathing, so what functionality are we talking about? Well, although bathtubs are used only for bathing, there are many features that add to the functionality of one. For instance, a whirlpool tub also provides a soothing and relaxing jet massage option in addition to regular bathing. Thus, you need to make sure that you will actually use the jets often and are not simply buying the tub because it has the added features. So, be clear on what your needs are and then pick a bath tub that fulfills them.

2) Tub size: The size of the bathtub is a major purchase criterion. People often assume that if the tub is big enough to fit them comfortably then it is the right size. However, there is such a thing as a too big bathtub. While the tub should definitely not be small for you, there shouldn't be too much extra space either, which results in water wastage. Another thing to consider is whether you want a one person or two person tub. If you are likely to want to share your bathtub with your partner, go in for the 2 person one. However, if bath time is when you want to be with your thoughts, then choose the regular sized single person bathtubs.

3) Design, shape, and color: The color of a bathtub may not increase its functionality, but is an important consideration as the tub has to match the rest of your bathroom fixtures and accessories. Same goes for the design and style of the bathtub. A bathtub that is of a different style than your sink or toilet may look very out of place. As far as colors go cream and white are the regular options, but different hues of blue, pink, brown, green, and maroon are also available to match your décor. Rectangle, corner tubs, heart shaped, and oval are your choices as far as bathtub shape goes.

4) Material of the bathtub: It is important to look at the construction materials of bathtubs, as their strength, durability, and ease of maintenance depends on that. Different materials used to make bathtubs are - Acrylic, Marble, Porcelain tubs, Wood, Cast iron tubs, and Fiberglass. A fiberglass bath tub is quite an inexpensive buy but is less durable than cast iron or porcelain bath tubs. Cast iron tubs will practically last you for generations but can be very pricey also. As far as looks go, nothing can beat wood and marble bathtubs, but these are extremely difficult to maintain and keep clean. Thus, depending on what your topmost priorities are (durability, strength, looks, cost etc), you should choose a construction material accordingly.

5) Type of bath tub: Bathtubs are mainly of two types - soaking or standard. A standard bathtub is good for regular bathing, but if you want a bathtub for therapeutic purposes as well, you should buy a soaking tub. A soaking tub allows your whole body to be immersed into the hot water filled tub, thereby providing much needed relief to tired and achy muscles. Even high blood pressure and stress can be reduced with a thorough soak. Thus, if you wish to benefit from the therapeutic value of a bathtub, do go in for a soaking tub instead of a standard one.

6) Special Needs: Contrary to what most people believe, even aged people and handicapped persons can enjoy a bathtub. Yes, a regular bathtub may be too dangerous for them, but ADA compliant bathtubs can certainly be used by people with special needs. ADA bathtubs are made in a manner that old and handicapped people can easily enter and exit the tub. Increased protection is provided by grab bars and grab rails so that there is little danger of slipping and falling. Even people who are on wheelchairs can use specially designed ADA tubs.

Adding A Bathtub Shower To Your Small Bathroom

Most people love taking a long relaxing shower now and then, but thanks to the busy lives we lead we typically end up having to take showers. If you are brooding about installing or improving your tiny bath shower you have varied options such as installing it in an alcove, or replacing your current tub with a new one. You even have a few unusual options such as turning your entire lavatory into a wet room. The following will provide you with some ideas on the easy way to fit tiny shower bathtubs.

One of the 1st options you need to consider is to simply replace the tub you already have with a new small bath shower. This is an expensive so it's really only suggested if the unit you have now isn't functioning correctly. However if you need something new to match the decor of the room and you have the money it is still a good solid option.

If you've a tub already but it did not have a shower built in, it is usually a less costly plan to just install a shower head into your already existing tub. This is the preferred system for most people because it's so straightforward to do and it does not cost much. You may also need to install a shower-curtain rod or screens to keep the floor from getting soaked. Whether or not this is a do it yourself job relies on if you have had plumbing experience or not. If you do not then you might risk getting harsh leaks and other Problems in the future.

Installing a tiny tub shower in an alcove may be the most suitable choice for you if you've got the right shape of loo. This technique isn't used all that regularly but when it is it can be a satisfactory way to make the most out of the bit of room you have available.

One intense option you may wish to consider is to convert your whole toilet into a wet room. In this method you're going to get rid of the floor you have now and install a massive shower tray on the floor. This indicates that you won't be ready to use your loo for anything else truly, but think about all of the space you'll have! Not the most typical way to install a little bathtub shower, but it is done sometimes and works good if you have a fairly little loo already.

Finally, one more solution is to simply clear out a corner in your lavatory, if there is not already one clear, and install a small tub shower there. As you can see, there are lots of alternative ways to install little shower bathtubs, and these are just a few examples.

Bathtub Refinishing Do It Yourself

Bathtub Refinishing - Do It Yourself? Thinking about refinishing your own bathtub?

Bathtub refinishing is not the best project to Do it Yourself! A good refinishing job on a bathtub should be very glossy, smooth to the touch, and have a uniform appearance just like a new bathtub. You will never be able to duplicate the glossy finish and feel professional refinishing gives your bathtub, sink or countertops with a do-it-yourself bathtub refinishing kit!

Ask yourself...Would you repaint your own car? Refinishing involves many of the same skills and materials used by professional auto body craftsmen. When you consider that 25% of all work performed by Miracle Method is redoing someone else’s attempt to refinish a bathtub, you should think twice before using a DIY bathtub refinishing kit on your bathtub.

Bathtub Refinishing - Do It Yourself? What is involved in the refinishing process?

A good bathtub refinishing job requires extensive preparation, use of special cleaners, bonding primers, fillers for cracks and chips, and the skill and experience to spray on fast drying acrylic coatings.

You will not get good results from a porcelain repair kit or bathtub refinishing kit, nor will you get the warranted durability a Miracle Method refinisher offers.

The Miracle Method process for refinishing a bathtub includes:

* Removing the existing caulk.
* Using a two-step cleaning process to remove soap scum, body oil, and dirt.
* The use of MM-4, a safe non-acid bonding agent, to assure the new coating will last.
* Porcelain chip repair.
* Two to three coats of high tech acrylic urethane sprayed on to assure an even surface.
* Buffing and polishing to deepen the gloss and create a like-new porcelain feel.
* A nearly 30-year reputation for quality backed by a five-year adhesion guarantee.

Bathtub Reglazing Cost

There has been a lot of question lately in the tub refinishing industry in respect to cost, there is a lot of competition which forces the refinishing industry to lower their costs in order to compete. You will see many advertisements stating a very low cost, sometimes as low as $150.00 and stating it will only take a couple of hours. What is happening is they are sacrificing quality service with lower prices!

Let me start with this, it takes at least 1-2 hours for a quality primer to set before applying the top coat! any less than that and there is a possibility of delayed cure and possible failure of finish. Quality primer is essential to the success of the finish and many companies are sacrificing the epoxy or poyurthane primer for a lower quality shellac based fast drying primer to move things along. This will certainly affect the longevity of the finish as these products are not designed for wet conditions. Some companies will skip this step altogether for the sake of moving along to another job! Definite finish failure! So, there is minimum 1-2 hours for priming.

Lets talk about preparation, this is probably the most time consuming and crucial part of the reglazing process and there are a number of things to do before any material is sprayed on.

1. Caulking needs to be scraped off and sanded at intersections to ensure complete removal. Caulking is a contaminant and will cause the finish to fail - 20 minutes to possibly 1 hour
2. The tub needs to be cleaned with Ajax to remove soap scum - 20 minutes
3. The tub needs to be acid etched - 30 minutes
4. Surrounding areas need to be covered to protect from over spray - 30 minutes to possibly 1 hour
5. The tub needs to be solvent wiped to remove oils from hands during the foregoing processes
6. The tub needs to be dusted with a tack cloth - 5 minutes

These six processes alone represent a possible time frame of 3 hours. What are we up to now? possibly 5 hours! Cleaning the equipment in between spraying and when finished - 30 minutes, paper pulling - 10 minutes, caulking - 10 minutes (but only after the finish has dried to the touch - 30 minutes up to 1 hour and sometimes even the next day!) What are we up to now? lets round off this example to 2 hours, that's a total of 7 hours so far.

Now, some jobs may not be as labor intensive and this time estimate is just an example of the possibility. You can give or take an hour or so depending on the experience of the finisher but the bottom line is this, it takes more than a couple of hours to do the deed and anyone telling you so is lying. You can rely on the better part of a day to reglaze a tub.

Lets get to cost. Quality products cost money and any refinisher should get paid what he is worth (at least $45-$50 an hour). A typical tub reglaze will cost roughly $70 in materials (primer, urethane, plastic, paper, tape, respirator elements and so on...) If a tub takes 7 hours @ $50/hour = $350, materials $70 = $420. We are not factoring in traveling costs cause we assume the refinisher is eating that cost. We are not factoring in the possibility of stripping an existing finish! So, a typical tub reglaze should cost between $350 and $420. As the old saying goes "You get what you pay for" especially in this business!

5 Steps to Choose a Liner Or Acrylic Bathtub With Bathroom Accessories

Choosing the right bathtub liner or acrylic tub can be difficult. You may be asking yourself, "can I, or should I, go over the exiting tub?" Are there choices available to improve the function, safety, and style of the existing unit? Can I get rid of old out of date colors without a major mess and time investment?

Learn 5 practical steps to assist you in making the right bathtub selection:

Step 1 - Identify your existing tub - The type of tub unit you have today will be a major driver in your replacement options. If you have a cast iron or steel bathtub you can use a liner to go over an existing unit that might be stained, chipped, cracked - or just plain ugly. If you're wondering how to determine if the tub is cast iron or steel listening to the sound while tapping on the tub can help you determine what's in your bathroom now.

If you have a fiberglass or plastic tub it's not possible to go over what's there with a liner. In these situations the old tub must be removed and it can be replaced with an new acrylic tub. These installations will take more installation time than a liner project.

Step 2 - Think through your needs for safety and improved function- The remodeling process should be the time to think and reflect on how you want to make the space work better. Would you like the tub area to be safer? Do you need to convert the tub into a shower or would reducing the height you have to step over the tub help? Would a deeper soaking tub add provide a more relaxing bathing experience?

For increased safety and comfort consider some of the following ideas:

• Use a liner or tub with a non-skid surface at the bottom.
• Add a safety grab bar on a side wall and back bathtub wall surround.
• Use a Kohler Archer style deep soaking tub.
• Consider a tub cut out to retrofit the existing tub for ease of entry.

Step 3 - Determine how quickly you'd like your bathtub project completed - The biggest advantage of bathtub liners is they can generally be installed in one day (complete with a new drain and overflow cover) since they are installed over the old unit. If you have only one full bathroom a liner may be the preferable way to go (assuming you have the right type of tub material - see Step 1).

If you need to remove your existing tub the installation will be more involved since you'll not only need to remove the tub but also there will be work needed with the wall surrounds (since the tub is installed behind the surround in most cases) and the floor (tiles or floor material may be underneath the tub and may break when the tub is removed).

A knowledgeable contractor will also want to look at your soap dish to see if it's recessed into the wall or extends out from the wall surround. If the dish extends out it can complicate the tub installation process.

Step 4 -Choose your colors wisely- If you're looking to move in the near future you'll want to choose neutral colors for your tub. Included below are various color selections you can use to replace outdated colors.

Acrylic bathtub liners- Colors include white, almond, biscuit, pearl, gray, white granite, gray granite and beige granite.

Kohler replacement acrylic tubs - Colors include white, cashmere, sandbar, skylight, biscuit, almond, ice gray, thunder gray, Mexican sand and innocent blush.

Step 5 - Add bathroom accessories to improve function, looks and style - When you're in the process or replacing a tub is the best time to get rid of an old stained or rusted overflow cover/drain and update it with a new chrome, brass, oil rubbed bronze, or white units.

Also consider adding safety features like a grab bar or tub seat. If you have a window in the bathroom and you're looking to increase privacy consider a glass block bathroom replacement window. Other nice additions include new soap dishes or bath tub corner caddies.

Know you're equipped with these 5 steps you're ready to select the acrylic tub or bathtub liner for your project.

Wait! Before You Buy - Pros and Cons of Whirlpool Tubs

Ask most people and they will quickly tell you that a luxury bathroom isn't complete without a whirlpool bathtub. These tubs are outfitted with jets in the sides that propel water with enough force to create a vigorous massaging motion. A simple soak in a whirlpool tub is able to loosen tense muscles and create a sense of relaxation. However, before you head out to your local home improvement store with credit card in hand, it is important to review the pros and cons of whirlpool tubs:

Pro: Increased home value

Take a quick tour of million dollar homes and you will notice that many of these spaces include luxurious bathrooms complete with whirlpool tubs. If you're currently remodeling or redesigning your space, it pays to think proactively about increasing current home value. Undoubtedly, the inclusion of a whirlpool tub in your bathroom is a huge selling point that can dramatically increase the return on your upgrade.

A note of caution: Make sure you completely think your decision through before you buy a bathtub. It is a short-sighted decision to simply upgrade your tub without paying equal attention to the rest of the bathroom. Along with your shiny new bathtub, you will also want to invest in upgraded fixtures and accessories. Paying close attention to these details can spell a dramatic jump in your property value!

Con: Expensive cost

This is especially the case for those you on a strict remodeling budget. Some of the best quality tubs can cost several thousand dollars! And this is just for purchase of the tub itself! Most people are not duly trained in installing whirlpool tubs so it is strongly advised to hire a contractor for installation. Hiring a quality contractor may add several hundreds of dollars to your budget. Most experts recommend adding a minimum of 10% of your total budget to hire a contractor for installation.

Pro: Relaxation at your fingertips

This almost goes without saying. Taking a nightly dip in a relaxing whirlpool tub is one of the major reasons why most people desire one! You can make this a quickly nightly ritual to de-stress and wind down from your day - or you can use your tub to replicate spa-like treatments for a fraction of the price. Beware - contrary to popular belief, whirlpool tubs are not designed for the use of bubble bath or salts.

Con: More Challenging Cleaning Regimen

These tubs can be more challenging to clean in comparison to some of your other jetted tubs. With air jet type tubs, you can simply drain the tub after you finish a bath and turn on the jets to allow dry out the tub. You cannot do the same for whirlpool tubs without risk of damage. A small amount of water - even as little as 1 cup of water - left in the jets can cause bacteria to begin growing. You will want to be extra diligent in keeping your tub clean in comparison to air jet tubs.

Accessing What Type of Bathtub You Will Need When Renovating Your Bathroom

If you are in a hurry or if you just like being proficient then a walk in shower is the most efficient way to get clean. But if you are like the rest of us who still enjoy a long leisurely soak then a bathtub is the obvious relaxation choice. With so many choices on the market, choosing the right one for you will be based on shape, size, features and the intended use of the tub. And let us not forget the spatial surroundings you intend to use the tub in (is it really practical to have a free standing claw foot tub in a high traffic family bathroom?).

In essence your bathroom layout plays an important role in deciding the size and type of bathtub that you purchase, whether it is free standing, sunken or built-in. Do your homework and access the space that the tub will be used in and it's also a good idea to actually sit in the tub you are thinking about buying. It's better to feel silly now than to be uncomfortable and disappointed later on when you have installed your tub and in frustration realize that you get a kink in your neck from the back rest of your brand new bathtub.

In its basic form, a bathtub is simply an air tight waterproof container hooked up to a plumbing system to get water in and out of the tub. But with the advent of technology it has become a lot more. From air jets, whirlpools, multimedia systems, chromatherapy and sound vibration therapy, the bath tub has come a long way from its ancient simplistic utilitarian predecessors. Do you bathe children or pets? Are you big or tall? What about elderly persons? There are particular walk-in tubs available to meet the special needs of a graying population.

Today tubs are produced in every imaginable size, shape color and from diverse materials. The most important thing to remember is to make sure your tub works with in your bathroom floor plan. Another thing to consider is your lifestyle choices, whether you are single, have a family or are elderly will all determine the style that is just right for you.

Simple Steps To Choosing Your Perfect Bathtub

With so many different types and styles of bathtubs available nowadays, choosing one which is perfect for you can get pretty confusing indeed. It is not just a matter of choosing the right color to go with your bathroom, or ensuring that the style is correct, but a whole lot more. In order to make sure that you buy a bathtub that is right for you, here are some things that you should take into consideration when looking at various bath tubs.

1) Functionality: Before you go to choose a bathtub, you should be clear about your requirements. Do not buy a whirlpool tub just because it looks so comfortable and inviting. Will you actually be using the jets often and can you justify the added energy costs as well as extra water consumption? While comfort is very important while choosing a bathtub, you also want to ensure that you will make use of all the features of the tub.

2) Size of the tub: A properly sized bathtub is an absolute must. You neither want your tub to be so small that you do not fit in it, nor do you want it to be so big that there is unnecessary usage of water. While considering the size of the bathtub, you also need to decide whether you want a one person tub or one which can fit two people. If you like to get cozy with your partner, then you may want to indulge and get yourself a two person tub. However, if your bath time is a time when you like to read or be thoughtful, you should go in for a one person bath tub.

3) Color and style: While not important to the function of the bathtub, the right color and style of the tub will make your bathroom look that much more inviting. Bathtubs are available in the standard colors of cream and white, but you can also get different colors such as blue, brown, maroon, green, and pink so as to match your d?cor. Shapes in bathtubs include the standard rectangle, as well as others such as heart shaped, oval, round, corner style etc.

4) Tub Material: The material which the tub is made of is also an important criterion when choosing a tub. According to their materials, tubs are classified as acrylic tubs, porcelain tubs, cast iron tubs, fiberglass, marble, and wood. While a fiberglass tub can be very cost effective, it may not be as durable as porcelain or an acrylic tub. A cast iron tub can last you for years but is quite expensive. Marble and wooden tubs can look very attractive but are very high maintenance and will not last you for very long. Thus, your choice of tub material will depend on your budget, your frequency of use, ease of maintenance of the tub, and its durability.

5) Soaking or standard: A bathtub is fast becoming very popular with people because of its therapeutic value. By soaking in a hot water bath, you can give relief to tired muscles and also relieve painful cramps. A good soak can even help to reduce your blood pressure as well as lower your stress levels, both of which bode very well for your heart. Thus, if you are looking to take advantage of the therapeutics involved with bath tubs, you should look for a soaking tub and not a regular one. Soaking tubs are deeper than regular models, whereby a person can soak their entire body comfortably and not just the lower part of their body.

6) Special Requirements: People who are old or those who have some kind of handicap may often have to forgo the pleasures of bathing in a tub as they may find it difficult to use a regular bathtub. If you or someone in your family has such special needs, you should consider getting a bathtub that is ADA compliant. Such bathtubs are made in such a way so as to afford easy entry and exit for the handicapped and the elderly. They even have grab bars and grab rails for added protection while using the bathtub. Some models can even be used by people who are restricted to wheelchairs.

In addition to all the above, your budget is also a factor while buying a bathtub. Another thing that you must do before making your final selection is to actually lie down in the bathtubs that you have short listed. This way, you can be sure that it is the right size and also gives the maximum comfort, while having adequate support for your neck, back, and head.

Hopefully, this guide will help you to choose a bathtub that is right for you and your family.

Use Your Japanese Bathtub As It Is Meant To Be Used

The first time you try a real Japanese bathtub, the experience may be a strange one, especially if you use the bathtub to have a bath in true Japanese-style. You can of course use the tub for bathing in the western style, but to get the full benefit it is usually best to take a look at how bathing is done in Japan and try to copy it so that you get the full experience, not to mention the full benefits of a true soaking tub.

The first thing you'll notice is that the size of a Japanese bathtub is much smaller than the usual western style tub, and if you're not used to it you may feel that your legs are crushed and that there is hardly enough room for you to get into the tub in the first place. However, this is to miss the point, since the whole point of the Japanese bathing experience is not to stretch out but to sit in water that is as deep as possible, and to get the water right up to the neck.

Which brings us on to the second point, which is that the water is much deeper than the usual western style tub, and although the baths are shorter the depth of the water will more than compensate for it. There is something absolutely wonderful about immersing yourself almost totally in hot water, not least of which is the fact that the water will get into every single muscle in your body and leave you feeling totally relaxed.

This brings us on to the third point, which is that a real Japanese bathing experience is one which uses very hot water, and that means water which is much hotter than that used in traditional Western-style bathing. Traditionally, Japanese houses were quite cold in winter, and in that kind of environment having a hot bath in the evening became an essential as much as something to be enjoyed. The good thing about it is that the heat will stay with you for hours, right up until the time you get into bed, so if you happen to live in a house that is on the cold side then a Japanese-style tub could be just what you need. In fact, turning down the heating can be good for your health, and so you could use the heat from the water to actually live in a more healthy environment.

So if you are thinking about buying a Japanese bathtub don't buy it simply to use it like a western tub, but use it as it was made to be used, which means very deep water, and water heated to a temperature that is as hot as you can handle. You will feel absolutely wonderful when you get out with totally relaxed muscles and a body that is packed with heat that will stay with you right up until bedtime.
